La Perla Workshop

The Project

an initiative by CGIL, CISL and UIL trade unions in collaboration with Teatro dell'Argine
December 2013 - April 2014

A theatre workshop to tell about the crisis that afflicts our times, to tell the troubled story of La Perla company which luckily came to an end in 2013, to involve workers, to look for a possible way to dream and mark a rebirth.

An extraordinary and touching journey, made possible by the great participants’ desire to get involved; a choral performance, grown out of the deep protagonists’ need to tell their stories and tell the audience the bewilderment you have to face when you’re about to lose of your job and your company’s about to close down.

Come una Perla premiered at Auditorium Primo Maggio in Crevalcore (BO) on April 30th 2014 and toured several theatres in the Region.

The show grew out of the collaboration between CGIL, CISL, UIL and Teatro dell'Argine as the outcome of a five months workshop involving workers of La Perla company. Main objective was documenting the crisis suffered by one of the main manufacturers of our region, a crisis which came to an end in 2013 thanks to a change of ownership that finally gave employees a glimmer of hope.
The uniqueness of this journey is given by the participants’ desire to get involved on a recent, and painful, piece of their own biography. Words, slogans, songs and situations in the show were almost all born from the extraordinary protagonists’ need to tell their stories and tell the audience the bewilderment you have to face when you’re about to lose of your job and your company’s about to close down; a company which always had a very strong bond with its workers, and the really unusual workers’ sense of belonging to it.
Anyway, if compared to many unfortunate cases, La Perla story seems to be a happy exception: and so the show turns into a sort of hymn to solidarity overcoming scepticism and disenchantment, and having the possibility, thanks to favourable circumstances, to dream again and mark a rebirth.

About the workshop...

«I’d never experienced theatre before, but what we did with the director was to collect memories, worries, hopes and take them on stage, as a choral story».

«Remembering a few moments was hard, there were months of great concern and confusion in the company. Anyway, I'm crossing fingers now, because rehearsing among us is something, but performing in front of the audience will be totally different».

«For us it was a way to mourn, to say what has not been said at the time of crisis, to express the sense of guilt that we feel for being part of the small group of “the saved ones”».
